Disk Image

O&O DiskImage 11 Pro For Just US$ 10 – World Backup Day!

Well, this is one heck of a sale. If you don’t already have a backup program in place, or you need to upgrade, O&O DiskImage is a solid product and this is a fantastic price. I don’t believe they’ve ever offered it for this low.

DiskImage does more than just back up files, it’s also a tool for disk cloning including the system files, disk images to make a complete copy of the entire disk and can create a recovery disk.

About the only thing I don’t like is their new UI. They continue this trend of making an interface drawn by a child. It’s so juvenile as to distract from the power of their application. Some may like it, but I’m not a fan.

O&O DiskImage 11 lets you back up an entire computer or single files whenever you want – even while the computer is being used. In the event you should lose your personal data it can be quickly restored with just a few mouse clicks – even when Windows is no longer able to start. It also supports SSD drives and the latest UEFI System.

O&O DiskImage lets you carry out a system restore and to duplicate or clone an entire PC or hard drive. You can even restore this backup onto a computer whose hardware is different from the original machine, for instance, where you have changed a motherboard on the target machine or have bought a brand new PC and want to restore an old backup onto it.

To be safe and not sorry you can get the new O&O DiskImage 11 Pro for just US$ 10, or O&O DiskImage 11 Server Edition for just US$ 49

Making and Burning ISOs on the cheap and easy with ImgBurn, VirtualCloneDrive and Daemon Tools Lite

I like cheap. I like easy. When you combine the two, you have my interest. And so it goes for making ISO images. Since it’s only 2015 and Microsoft has just figured out how to write an ISO image, clearly you’re going to have to fend for yourself. But fear not, there are plenty of ISO apps out there. Sad part is, most of them want a king’s ransom in payment which just chaps me to no end. However, before you spend good gaming money on making ISO images check out these tools for creating and mounting ISO images for free and for less than $5.

First we’ll look at cheap. To mount and image I’ll go with Old Reliable, VirtualCloneDrive. This comes to us by the fine folks over at Slysoft who are known for their prowess with DVDs. Install this free tool and mount multiple disks just by double-clicking. This is great for mounting images of Windows, Office and even movies. Fill up that 5TB hard drive with ISO images of your movies and just click to play. Pretty dam awesome!

image Now, if you want to make an ISO, and you want to do it for free, then it’s time to turn your attention to IMGBurn. It has a simple interface that lets you either make an image or burn an image. That’s all you need. Load the disk, open the app and click the button to make a disk image to your hard drive. It’s simple and straightforward, but it can make an image without any trouble.

I would hardly call it a drawback, but it’s two applications running. Two rather small applications, but two applications none the less.

If you’re looking for a single app to handle both creating and mounting ISOs then it’s over to the long running Daemon Tools. These guys have been around for ages and if you want a reliable and cheap solution, this is the way to go.

You can get Daemon Tools Lite which creates and mounts ISO images for a mere $3.99. That’s right, for less than the cost of a shot of tequila, you get both features in one app. Daemon Tools is very easy to use with a simple UI. Click the large + sign to add images and click the large Play button to open them. Daemon Tools also hooks into AnyDVD so you can indeed read your DVD collection and make mountable movies out of them. I did it and it worked fine.

I’ve been using ImgBurn and VirtualCloneDrive for quite some time, but have just recently switched over to Daemon Tools simply because I wanted one app that could do both and it’s really hard to argue with a $4 price tag.

A couple of impressive features for Daemon Tools:  (I like that Blu-Ray feature)

  • Mount *.mdx, *.mds/*.mdf, *.iso, *.b5t, *.b6t, *.bwt, *.ccd, *.cdi, *.bin/*.cue, *.ape/*.cue, *.flac/*.cue, *.nrg, *.isz disc images to a virtual drive
  • Create .iso, *.mds/*.mdf and *.mdx images of CD, DVD, Blu-ray discs
  • image

O&O DiskImage Pro 8.5 on Sale for $14

I got this as an email, O&O DiskImage Pro is on sale for a mere $14. O&O is one of those tools that allows you to backup the files on your machine as well as clone the entire drive. One of the cool features is you can make a backup of a drive and then mount that file like it was drive. Even if the drive is gone you can still work with it like it was installed. I’ve also used DiskImage to clone a drive before I  did a replacement. I upgraded from a small 500GB drive to a massive 3TB system drive and I was able to transfer the entire OS and all my apps without incident. I probably should have just reinstalled, but I figured it would be more fun to risk everything and just clone the whole machine. Funny thing is, it worked no problem.

I’ve also used Acronis True Image and I’m not sure which is better. They both work really well so I would say it’s a matter of getting whichever one is on sale. If you’re looking for some backup and imaging software, O&O DiskImage Pro is a good choice. The sale ends soon so you need to act fast.

If DiskImage isn’t quite your thing, you can use the coupon code – H6D-RHT-INT – to get a 15% discount of whatever you want.

Acronis True Image 2012 for $19.95. That includes the Plus Pack and a Second Copy for Free

Here’s a deal I pretty much couldn’t refuse. For $19.95 you get two copies of True Image 2012, the Plus Pack and a free upgrade to True Image 2013 when it comes out. I assume that will be the end of the months since that’s when the deal ends. There is a deal out there right now where you can get this same bundle for $29.95, but this is the same deal for an additional $10 off.

Considering the hard drive issues I’ve had recently, getting a true backup of all my data seems like a good idea. I’ve also been messing around with O&O DiskImage 6, and while that’s a decent app, it’s not really as feature rich as it should be and it’s too kludgey to build a boot disk for it. It’s not bad, it just could be better.

The deal ends August 22, so if you’re looking to make a backup of your entire drive, want to clone your machine into a VM, or you’re looking to do some serious upgrades/patching and want a safety need, this should help you out.

Converting A Physical Hard Drive To A Virtual Hard Disk

At first glance the project seemed easy – clone the physical hard drive inside a server and restore it into VirtualBox so as to use the virtual copy. Turns out, it doesn’t work the way I envisioned it in my head. All the latest software made promises of one-click cloning and on the fly conversion to VHD. But in the end, after three days of trying, I’m scrapping this project. I just can’t seem to get it to work.

I tried using the latest software like O&O DiskImage 6, which listed VHD as one of the output formats. Well, it outputs to VHD alright, but that image doesn’t load. I cloned the drive without incident, but for the life of me I can’t that server to boot in a virtual environment. I created a VHD, I restored to a new VDI, I installed a new OS and tried the restore from there, I used a boot CD and restored from there. Not one of these methods would actually produce a working system. I can lay down the data to a data drive and see all the content with no problem, but no matter which process I use I can’t seem to get a bootable clone of my server. I admit, I’m not the sharpest knife in the things that holds knives, but I can’t for the life of me see what I’m doing wrong. I’ve been trying for three days and have called it quits.

This was supposed to be a simple task, a 3-4 hour job that would transport the server from the physical realm to the virtual one. With the amount of time I’ve wasted I could have installed a new server, installed all the frameworks and rebuilt everything from scratch, which is exactly what I’m going to do. I wanted a clone so I could perform maintenance with minimal downtime. If I had to rebuild the damn thing, I might as well start over and do a full blown upgrade. It’s not what I had in mine, but when all else fails, reinstalled is the best option.

If anyone knows the right process, the right software, the right way to hold your fingers to clone a drive and get it to load in VirtualBox, please let me know. I’m dying to know how it’s done. It’s sort of like a magic trick, I want to know how the cool kids do it.
