When it comes to installing apps, the Kindle Fire sucks!
It’s pretty damn obvious there are more apps NOT in the Amazon store than available for purchase. Google’s Android Market has plenty more to offer, not to mention sales, but good luck getting in on that action. Even though it’s Android based, Amazon has gone out of their way to prevent us from shopping anywhere else. Games like Cut the Rope and Flick Quarterback are on sale for $0.49 over at Google, but the damn Kindle can’t hook in.
After spending hours searching for workarounds, gimmicks, quick fixes, hacks and backdoors, I’ve walked away realizing the only thing you can do is root the device and install a bunch of hacks, of which nobody seems to agree on the method and success isn’t guaranteed.
What a load of crap! I complained before that the Amazon Marketplace is woefully inadequate when it comes to apps and games for the Kindle and this just seals the deal. If Amazon doesn’t have it, which is just as much to do with devs don’t want to deal with Amazon, then you’re out of luck. Rooting the device doesn’t actually seem that hard, but why should I have to do that? Why should I have to lose functionality in one place to try and get it back somewhere else?
I never considered the Kindle Fire to be a replacement or even competitor to the iPad. I got it as a backup music player and eBook reader. But because of the smaller screen I’ve never used it as a reader. Now that I want some actual apps on it I feel pretty screwed. It won’t hook into any of the other Android Markets so basically the choices are limited. Some people say iTunes is too restrictive and locks you in. Really? I feel the opposite. Going to one market where I can get half a million apps knowing they will run on my device is a pretty damn good feeling. This Android hackery is bullshit. I know this has more to do with Amazon than anything else, but right now, Android based tablets, especially the Kindle Fire are crap. Give me an iPad and iTunes over this mess any day.
Holy Crap, 25 Billion downloads
I watched it tick over. It’s still Amazing!!! What did you download?!?!
Getting Ready for the 25 Billionth iTunes Download
Sure, it may be as unlikely as playing the lottery, but you have to try right? And, unlike the lottery, I actually get something out of this deal. I’m picking the apps I’m going to buy as close to the 25 billion mark as I can. I’m going to throw caution to the wind and spend a staggering $5 in the hopes of winning $10,000. The odds are with me right? What could possibly go wrong?
Wow, 25 billion downloads. Just think, it was January 2011 when Apple only had 10 billion. They’re racking up quick!
So, if by some stretch of the imagination I don’t get the $10k prize, what’s the first thing you’ll do with it?
Looks like Apple fixed the battery drain with iOS5 update
Looks like the latest update to iOS5 has corrected some of those issues with the battery. The battery drain was still pretty bad under OS 4.3. I would fully charge the device and it would drop to 98% or less overnight. With iOS5 it’s still 100% even after a full day of sitting. That’s more along the lines of what I saw with iOS3.2. Maybe they finally got this worked out.
